He wasn't very detailed in his explanation but someone else on the thread said the trick worked for them too. but searching this forum i came up with a thread of someone who had solved their issue on mac by getting mono installed correctly.

Now im on linux and don't have a mac around to be able to tell you exactly how to try this on your system. Re-installing (properly installing?) the mono-runtime environment has fixed the launching problem of this game for many people (though maybe not for everyone) Now from what i've heard and seen here it seems that the devs wrote the installation of mono-runtime into the install script for hammerwatch - BUT on some systems it failed to install mono properly when installing the game (not sure why but i've seen people on here with this issue in both linux and mac). Now this is how hammerwatch is made and it is necessary to have mono-runtime installed correctly or the game will not work at all on mac/linux.
well, one thing that might be causing the issue is something called mono-runtime which is an interpretter for apple and linux that allows those OS to read and execute windows programs written in ".net" format. I ca't find any changelog or details of the patch but it might have fixed things for you?
i noticed steam downloaded at 3.3 mb patch for hammerwatch when i logged on today. must be really frustrating to not be able to get this working.
